George R. Greenidge, Jr. Named a 2022 Harvard Diversity Inclusion & Belonging Express Grant Recipient for his Convening and Community Work
After reading about a grant opportunity online, I saw an opportunity to bring my unique skills across Harvard University's campus and community. As an indigenous Cantabrigian, I have had varied experiences in my post-secondary studies. I graduated from Morehouse College the only liberal art Black Male historically black college in the nation. I also graduated from Harvard University with my master's. Currently, the majority of my doctorate work was at the largest state institution in Georgia, Georgia State University, known for its diverse student body and urban campus. I eagerly wanted to find a way to share these experiences with the Harvard community. As a Visiting Fellow, I applied for this new grant program out of the Harvard Office for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. My initial ideas received support from Archon Fung (Faculty Director) and Tim Burke (Executive Director of Programs) from Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
Earlier this year, I was named one of the 2022 Diversity Inclusion & Belonging Express Grant Recipients. These grants are awarded to Harvard staff, faculty, postdocs, and researchers to pursue innovative ideas that will create opportunities for learning, contribute to enhancing diversity initiatives, and catalyze culture change. Excellence is inclusive. Through these DIB programs and other initiatives, Harvard is creating its capacity to build community and spark innovation in support of antiracist and inclusive initiatives to ensure that this is a place where everyone can thrive. Informed by the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on Inclusion and Belonging, our office will guide Harvard’s culture toward inclusive excellence by convening stakeholders, serving as a catalyst for strategic efforts, analyzing University-level progress, optimizing investments, and facilitating University-wide coordination. The Culture Lab is an incubator for ideas that create a culture of belonging at Harvard The Culture Lab is designed to encourage everyone to engage in experimentation to uncover solutions for inclusive excellence. Grants aim to transform the University to achieve full belonging and empowerment for all Harvard community members.
